Master Scholarships in Environmental Studies (JEMES), Erasmus Mundus, Europe

JEMES – Joint European Master in Environmental Studies is strongly interdisciplinary, integrating course units delivered by academic staff from all four partner universities and leading guest scholars.

Based on long term excellence in teaching and research, the programme is devoted to the quality of the environment and related technologies as well as to sustainable management and conservation.

JEMES deals from the technological and managerial perspective with chemical, physical and biological changes in the environment as well as social and economic aspects and considers the behaviour of air, water and soil as they are affected by anthropogenic activities.

An international Master

JEMES is an innovative Master in Environmental Studies offered jointly by:

•Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH), Germany

•Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Spain

•Universidade de Aveiro (UA), Portugal

•Aalborg Universitet (AAU), Denmark

JEMES is an exclusive high end programme that promotes students mobility. Participants are required to study in at least two of the partner universities in order to obtain a Joint Master Degree.

Two main orientations

JEMES integrates two different scientific orientations (streams):

•Stream 1 is more oriented towards Technology (Environmental Technology Engineering, TUHH and UA)

•Stream 2 is more oriented towards Social Science / Management (Environmental Management Engineering, UAB and AAU).

You will be exposed to a range of demanding learning experiences. In addition to fundamental subjects, you may choose among a large number of elective options.

JEMES is truly interdisciplinary. Mobility is organised in a way that students will be exposed to each stream for at least one entire semester. Thus, those students who start at TUHH or UA (Environmental Technology Engineering) will spend their second semester at UAB or AAU, and those starting at UAB and AAU (Environmental Management Engineering) move for their second semester to TUHH or UA. During the second semester they have to take a binding decision whether to continue in Stream 1 (Environmental Technology Engineering) or in Stream 2 (Environmental Management Engineering) for semester 3 and 4 and at which of the two possible locations.

Training will provide students with a solid and broad scientific background in the field and important abilities and qualifications such as problem solving, teamwork, management of complex environmental processes, analytical competency, not to mention high intercultural awareness and excellent communication skills, fluency in English and knowledge of other European languages, a network of valuable contacts.

Go for new courses after SPM, says Muhyiddin

By HAMDAN RAJA ABDULLAH

Wednesday March 24, 2010

MUAR: Students who excelled in the SPM examination should pursue new and challenging courses towards creating greater growth for the nation.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said they should not just focus on normal courses or those which made job-seeking easier in the future.

They should venture into fields such as bio-technology, nanotechnology, green technology, digital animation and others that would make them more innovative, he said.

“The students are in a critical time period after the SPM and the courses they choose will not determine their careers but also the nation’s future.

“This is because the nation is going through a transition into a high-income economy,” he said when launching a prospectus on education, training and career opportunities for 2010/2011 at SM Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah 1 in Pagoh on Friday.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said that creativity would enrich human capital with more knowledge and push the nation towards the high-income economy.

There were vast opportunities for students to go into higher studies as there were 20 universities, 27 polytechnics, 59 community colleges and 345 private higher learning institutions with university and college status, he added.

The students could also take up vocational and technical courses at public or private institutions that had the potential to produce a highly-skilled workforce.

Muhyiddin praised the Muar Education Department, teachers and parents in Pagoh for the high number of students who excelled in the SPM examination last year.

He said that 32 students in Pagoh achieved excellent grades although they studied in rural schools.
“As Pagoh MP, I am proud of them, the schools, teachers, parents and the department, and thank them all.

“I also want to thank Persatuan Warga Cinta Negara for giving cash rewards to the students and distributing the prospectus to schools in Pagoh,” he added.
